Old Torrance, around El Prado and Cravens, was laid out early last century, and many of those houses still run their original clay lateral and cast iron drains. Both age the same way: clay separates at the joints and lets roots in, cast iron scales inward until the pipe is passing waste through a fraction of its diameter. The postwar boom filled in Southwood, West Torrance and the tracts off Sepulveda and Hawthorne with single-story homes on slab foundations, copper water lines run beneath the concrete.

That copper is now the age where pinholes form, and a slab leak usually announces itself as a water bill that jumped with nothing dripping.
