Salt in the coastal soil corrodes cast iron from the outside, so what looks like a stubborn clog is often a pipe that has scaled down to half its diameter. On the bluff streets — Shore Cliffs, Cameo Shores, Irvine Terrace — the lateral often runs long and steep, and grade changes plus decades of settling create bellies where waste sits instead of moving.
